DUI Driver Kills One Bicyclist and Seriously Injures Two Others in Huntington Beach Crash sue liable incident compensation lawyer attorney

An intoxicated woman behind the wheel of a Mercedes reportedly crashed into three bicyclists in Huntington Beach, killing at least one of them. The crash occurred at approximately 6:45sm on Monday, October 20, 2025 on Pacific Coast Highway near Beach Blvd. The driver has been identified as Amber Calderon, a 43-year-old from Long Beach, California. She is facing multiple charges, including felony DUI, possession of narcotics, hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the authorities.

A spokesperson with the Huntington Beach Police Department said that “the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of [the] 2006 E-Class hit the three bicyclists as they rode on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway.” The driver came to a stop about half a mile from the scene of the crash, where she was arrested.

All three of the bicyclists struck were adult men. One of the cyclists was, unfortunately, declared dead at the scene. The other two cyclists sustained severe injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Helicopter footage of the scene showed the mangled bicycles along the shoulder of the road, showing the severity of the incident.

The authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward and contact them.

    Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents

As mentioned above, the driver behind the wheel was intoxicated when the crash occurred. Unfortunately, DUI drivers can fail to see bicyclists riding on the shoulder of the road. They may also fail to give them appropriate space or may drive right into them. In addition to these possible causes of these incidents, incidents may also occur due to poorly lit roads, defective traffic signals, mechanical failures, poor weather conditions affecting visibility, and bicyclists ignoring traffic rules or weaving in and out of traffic, for example.

No matter the specific cause of the incident, it is important that you understand that you could have the right to file a lawsuit for the resulting injuries.

Some of the Injuries that May Occur

Bicyclists that are struck by vehicles may suffer a host of injuries, some of which may lead to temporary or permanent disability or be fatal. Bicyclists involved in these incidents may be run over by the vehicle, thrown many feet into the air or onto oncoming traffic, or dragged for many feet on the road. Some of the different injuries that could result from these incidents could include the following:

    • Traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures, brain hemorrhages, and concussions
    • Facial injuries, like broken nose, broken jaw, broken teeth, eye injuries, and more
    • Neck injuries, including whiplash
    • Back injuries, including herniated discs, broken back, and more
    • Spinal cord injuries, which may lead to paraplegia or quadriplegia
    • Broken legs, broken arms, broken ribs, etc.
    • Shoulder injuries, hip injuries, pelvic injuries, and knee injuries
    • Dislocations and fractures
    • Crushing injuries
    • Organ damage, including impalement injuries and hemorrhaging
    • Road burn
    • Death

Can I File a Lawsuit after a Bicycle Accident?

Yes, you can have the right to file a lawsuit. Whether he incident resulted in injuries or caused the death of a member of your family, you could have the right to file a lawsuit (either an injury claim or wrongful death claim based on the circumstances). The right to sue is generally based on the concept of negligence. More specifically, all drivers on the road owe bicyclists a duty of care. When they drive recklessly or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they are breaching their duty of care and can cause an incident that could lead to harm. When a driver breaches their duty of care, they can be liable for all injuries or harm that occurs as a result.

This means that injured victims and their families could pursue claims. To ensure that you have an understanding of your right to file a bicycle accident lawsuit after the incident mentioned above or a similar incident, please do not hesitate to reach out o our legal team as soon as possible.

What Compensation is Available for Recovery?

Claimants who pursue bicycle accident claims could be eligible to receive compensation. Although every claim is different, some of the types of compensation that could be available for recovery could include some of the following:

    • Medical costs
    • Lost pay
    • Pain and suffering
